Harry grew up in Philadelphia and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in psychology from Washington University, St. Louis.
He is professor emeritus of human services at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). Prior to his retirement from UIS in June 2011 Berman served for 5 years as provost and, then, for one year as interim chancellor. Following his retirement from UIS, he served as Executive Director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) from 2012 to 2014. After living in one of Springfield's magnificent Victorian homes for 40 years, he and his wife Deborah moved to Fox Meadows West in 2000.
Berman has served on the boards of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln and the United Way of Central Illinois. He has been a long-time board member of Advance Illinois, a state-wide educational policy advocacy organization and he is active in the Springfield Jewish community.
